Black Box Dance Theatre in Schools
Black Box Dance Theatre works in counties across NC to bring modern dance to K-12 students through in-school performances, professional development, residencies, and dance workshops. BBDT specializes in arts integration, teaching students about the world and themselves through the power of dance. In schools, BBDT encourages students to share their stories, move their bodies, and connect with others in meaningful ways. BBDT is honored to be on the current cARTwheels Teaching Artist Roster, allowing them to offer longer residencies and deeper connections with students. During the 23-24 school year, BBDT went into over 25 schools and exposed over 5,000 NC students to modern dance.
UAC School Shows, Workshops, & Residencies
Through the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, BBDT leads 15-25 days per year of K-12 school workshops designed to integrate dance standards with other core curriculum areas, such as ELA, Math, History, Science, and P.E.
From geometry formulas to force and motion, the Revolutionary War, Marie Curie, and radium, we support embodying learning. In addition to workshops for students, BBDT frequently leads professional development workshops for educators.
NC Arts Council cARTwheels
NC Arts Council’s cARTwheels program provides high-quality stage performances and residency experiences to students, educators, and communities across the state.
cARTwheels engagements typically include:
A teacher workshop (required, two to three hours) to help teachers create entryways for their students to the performance.
Live performances: two 50-minute, high-quality, age-appropriate performances that engage students’ imaginations. These performances will be presented at local performance venues.
Residency activities in schools and the community.
Study guides to introduce students to the performance. Guides include activities and resources that make curricular connections and facilitate extensions in the classroom.
